- 130 grain premium deer round Review by MTF
-
My hunting rifle is the Steyr Pro Hunter in 6.5 X55. I have tried many bullet brands in this gun with varying results, not necessarily good. The 7.7:1 twist is tricky and the shorter bullets have difficulty here. The SCII with it's 1.353" length is ideal for this twist rate.
The bullet is extremely accurate at the velocity I shoot, 2650fps. The areas that I hunt in Idaho are heavily forested and a long shot would be 100 yards. The accuracy of the SCII allows me any shot placement on the animal I choose as my group size is less than 2 calibers at 100 yards. At the velocity I shoot I have recovered only 2 bullets. both with more than 95% weight retention and textbook mushrooming.
One bullet recovered went through the animal and was actually sitting on the hillside approximately 10 yards beyond the POI. The only reason it was recovered is light rain and a few warmer days in early November allowed some grass to grow on the hillside, there was about 1" of fresh turned dirt that caught my eye as I inspected the animal and I thought, "no way". The bullet was just barely exposed in the sun light. I was eager to weigh the bullet as soon as I returned home, 126.1 grains. I can't tell if the weight loss was due to the impact in the dirt or the deer, but obviously most of the energy was spent in the animal and that allowed the recovery from the dirt. The second recovery was in the animal. The shot was 92 yards, angled uphill, through the neck below the chin (whitetail). The bullet exited and caught the right top of the animals hind quarter. This wound looked like a graze in the field, but upon skinning revealed another entry wound. The bullet was recovered at the base of the tail approximately 12" from it's second entry point. This bullet weighed 127.6 grains after two strikes in the same animal. In both cases the animals fell on the spot and tracking was not necessary. So, performance of the SCII in varying circumstances proves to be an excellent bullet for my application. Thanks Swift! - I have a Ruger 264 Win Mag, had it for for a while now, I tried countless combinations of bullets and powders, pretty much every brand in all weights. some bullets did ok, other were just plain bad, flyers in the neighborhood of a foot at 100 yards. I was about to give up on the gun itself, I thought something was really wrong that wasn't visible to the naked eye. I decided to try the Swift of Scirocco II 6.5/264 bullet when they first came out, had to wait about 6 months to get them. That fixed that gun, 3/4 inch groups at 100 yrds. I'll take that out of a gun that wouldn't even come close to that before. As for the deer shot with that gun with Swift Bullets, they don't even know they've been hit, they go 50 yards at the most and fall over. I have been nothing but impressed with the Siroccos in that caliber, and don't see me changing anything in the near future. (Posted on 10/9/11)
- Fantastic Review by dr141
- Have shot three elk now with this bullet in my .264 Win Mag, only recovered one bullet but it was a perfect classic mushroom on a 400 yard shoulder shot. I've shot a lot of elk and I put their performance on the highest level. (Posted on 1/8/11)
